WOLFSBURG - The sixth generation Passat will be launched on the German market on 11 March. Advanced sales start today for the saloon.

The Passat will initially be offered with four different engines: the 1.6 l FSI with 85 kW / 115 PS and the 2.0 l FSI with 110 kW / 150 PS with homogeneous direct injection will be available in the Passat for the first time, as will be the 1.9 l TDI with 77 kW / 105 PS and the 2.0 l TDI with 103 kW / 140 PS. All four engines are combined with a manual gearbox. During the coming year, the FSI engine will be available with an automatic gearbox, and the 2.0 l TDI 103 kW / 140 PS will be paired with a direct shift gearbox. The engine and gearbox combinations will be extended throughout the year. The 75 kW / 102 PS petrol engine will go on sale shortly after the market launch.

The new Passat can be ordered in four equipment levels: Trendline is the entry level package with a high standard of comfort, convenience and safety. Comfortline places even more emphasis on functionality, convenience and comfort. Sportline is a dynamic version of the Passat. The Passat Highline equipment level positions the Passat in the range of the upper-mid-class.

With its chrome radiator grille, its stylish interior design and its intelligent safety and functional elements, such as the electronic parking brake, the innovative starting and locking system and the automatic luggage compartment opening feature, the new Passat has a range of features unique to its segment and which are usually found only in luxury class vehicles. However, the Passat remains affordable: with the entry level 75 kW / 102 PS petrol engine, the new Passat costs exactly the same as it did in the previous generation. At the market launch, the 1.6 l FSI with the Trendline equipment level is available from 23,075 euros, the 2.0 l FSI costs 25,450 euros. The TDI-engines have a starting price of 24,010 euros for the 1.9 l TDI, and 25,650 euros for the 2.0 l TDI.

The Passat – the continuation of a success story
The first Passat was built at the Volkswagen factory in Emden 32 years ago. The Passat has become the most successful Volkswagen model after the Golf and Beetle. Over 13 million vehicles have been built since 1973. This means that on average, some 1.150 Passats have been delivered every day for over three decades (2004: 2,700 per working day). The most important markets for the Passat are Germany, Italy, France and Great Britain in Europe. China and the USA are the strongest overseas markets.

Other additions to the model range include safety features like cornering lights and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Auxiliary heating is now also available.

The combination of a direct shift gearbox and a TDI engine is ideal as the low consumption of the diesel engine is maintained despite the automatic transmission. The 2-litre TDI accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 206 km/h. The average consumption is 6.0 litres. The Passat 2.0 l 103 kW TDI with direct shift gearbox fulfils the EU 4 emissions standard and is available from €27,400. This engine is also available with a diesel particulate filter for an extra €565.

Safety can be increased further with several new options: The special equipment available for the Passat now also includes Bi-Xenon headlights featuring the dynamic cornering light function. A maximum swivelling angle of 15 degrees ensures optimum illumination of the road. The system is rounded off with an additional static turn-off light. Aligned to around 35 degrees to the side of the vehicle axle, these lights also illuminate the roadside when you turn into side roads. This option comes at €1,210.

The tyre pressure monitoring system makes another contribution to the increased safety. The wheels are equipped with sensors that send a data telegram to the convenience system control unit. The data received is compared with the preset tyre pressure. A warning indicator informs the driver when tyre pressure is lost. This option is available from €210.

A heavy-duty suspension system, which has been raised by 20 millimetres, is also new to the range. It features a stiffer damper configuration and an engine protection plate. The heavy-duty suspension costs €520.

Comfort was one of the main focuses during development of the Passat. An auxiliary heating system is another new option. It can be switched on either with a timer switch or, if you prefer, with a remote control. The system is not only useful in the winter, the auxiliary ventilation function can also be used to reduce the temperature inside the car in the summer. The auxiliary heating with timer switch is available from €1,150 and the auxiliary heating with remote control from €1,350.

The new generation Passat can now also be ordered with permanent 4MOTION four-wheel drive. It will be available at first with two engines: In the two-litre class, customers can choose between the 2.0l 110 kW/150 hp direct-injection petrol engine or the 2.0l 103 kW/140 hp turbo diesel engine. The diesel version is also available with a diesel particulate filter.

The proven Haldex coupling is electronically controlled for optimum positive engagement. The 4MOTION system can adjust the engine torque to the road conditions and vary the distribution to all four wheels – this provides a real advantage in terms of safety and driving fun particularly on autumn and winter roads. Both engine versions come with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The average consumption of the 2.0l FSI saloon is 8.9 litres (estate: 9.0 litres). The direct-injection petrol engine accelerates from nought to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds (estate: 10.2 seconds) and reaches a top speed of 209 km/h (estate: 206 km/h). The Passat 2.0l 110 kW/150 hp FSI fulfils the EU4 emissions standard. The saloon is available in Germany from €27,525 and the Passat Estate starts at €28,625.

The average consumption of the 2.0l TDI saloon is 6.8 litres (estate: 7.0 litres). The 2.0l TDI saloon accelerates from nought to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds (estate: 10.5 seconds) and reaches a top speed of 204 km/h (201 km/h). The Passat 2.0l 103 kW/140 hp TDI also meets the EU4 emissions standard and is available in Germany from €27,750. The Passat Estate TDI starts at €28,850.

From November, the flagship engine version from the Comfortline will be the Passat 3.2l V6 FSI presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, which features permanent four-wheel drive and the dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) as standard. It delivers 184 kW /250 hp and develops a maximum torque of 330 Nm.
