2006 PORSCHE BOXSTER - Reviews, Articles, Photos and Wallpapers

WHAT PORSCHE HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS CAR:

Source: Porsche

The design of a Porsche always speaks in a universal language: people everywhere love to drive. But something about a Boxster speaks with a voice like that of a Siren: it calls to you, and resistance seems futile. What its subtly-reshaped exterior promises is too enticing, what its aesthetically-intelligent interior conveys is too compelling. If driving is your passion, the new Boxster will fuel it.

What caused such a stir at the first unveiling of the Boxster concept, and what continues to stir the emotions today is not easy to verbalize. It's visual. And certainly, it's visceral. But whatever it is, the Boxster has clearly succeeded in capturing the essence of what Porsche is about. In the new Boxster, that feeling, of a machine whose soul is as playful as your own, lives on.
There is no shortage of intellectual exchange taking place in the design studios at Weissach, the home of Porsche. Every alternation proposed to the Boxster had to be rationalized, held up to the ideal that form must follow function.

On both the new Boxster and Boxster S models, a number of design enhancements to the original were ultimately approved. The entire front of the car has been completely redesigned. A new, oval-shaped headlight design is unique to the new Boxster and instantly recognizable at night. The new headlights now taper towards the front bumper and incorporate the indicator lights. The fog lights and sidelights are now housed in a separate module in the respective front air intakes. And the side intake grills that funnel air to the engine are titanium-colored.

At the rear, the Boxster has been given a new taillight design with improved illumination, and a new retractable rear spoiler that reduces tail-end lift. Connecting the new front and rear design features are new side-skirt moldings that serve to accentuate the taut and curving mid-section. And take note of the supplemental safety bars on the new Boxster: the larger diameter bars enhance rollover protection.

Perhaps the most obvious change to the Boxster exterior is its newly designed wheels. Both the style of the wheels and the dimensions have been revised to achieve performance goals. The standard wheel diameter is now 17 inches on the Boxster and 18 inches on the Boxster S. A choice of 19-inch wheels is also available as optional equipment.

The Boxster interior has also been examined, and the result is an evolution of its ergonomics. The seats have been redesigned for more lateral support. A steering wheel option is a new three-spoke multifunction design that integrates the optional PCM. The center console places essential controls in a striking new layout. And the dials are a distinguishing feature: they're black on the Boxster, light grey on the Boxster S.

While each of the new Boxsters design details were justified for its functional value, the design as a whole still needed to express this simple design philosophy: While form must follow function, one of the functions of Porsche design is to fuel dreams.

All roadsters promise performance. The new Boxster delivers it, as only a Porsche can. What makes driving a Porsche Boxster unique is the way it feels over the road. The Boxster's mixture of handling precision and potent acceleration was forged over decades of Porsche motorsports competition, and is the result of the most advanced automotive technologies.

Both new Boxster models are powered by a water-cooled, six-cylinder 'boxer' engine with four-valve cylinder heads. Blip the throttle: that smooth scream you hear is the free-revving response of an engine designed to breathe deeply. Call it lung capacity–the Boxster engine design pushes large volumes of air into and out of the engine quickly and efficiently, each cycle producing an emphatic power stroke. Engine performance has been considerably enhanced by a new exhaust system with modified manifolds, a new air filter unit and uprated engine management. Fuel injection and ignition are precisely controlled by the Motronic ME 7.8 engine management system. The resulting power output reaches a maximum of 240 hp on the Boxster and 280 hp on the Boxster S.

The new two stage resonance intake manifold ensures high levels of torque even at lower speeds. Maximum torque output of 199 ft-lb. on the Boxster, and 236 on the Boxster S, is available between 4,700 and 6,000 rpm. Both engine variants are built to handle the added horsepower. The crankshaft is forged, and runs in seven main bearings. On the Boxster, the bearing bridge is made entirely of aluminum, thus reducing engine weight. On the new Boxster S, with its higher engine temperatures, a combination of aluminum and cast-iron is required. An additional benefit? A reduction in engine noise. That throttle you've been blipping? It's electronic, precise movements are digitally tied to the engine management to produce a throttle response that's instantaneous.

Enhancement of the new Boxster is not limited to its engineering. Significant improvements were made to its ergonomic design and interior amenities. There's leather, of course, in a range of colors and varying in application from Standard trim to optional Full Leather trim. You can also accent the leather interior with your choice of optional materials: Carbon fiber. Aluminum-Look finish. A luminous light wood veneer called Sycamore. Or an exotic, deeply-grained dark wood veneer, Makassar. Even the instrument dials can be personalized, with six optional colors to choose from.
