engine ever to grace an Acura, the RL's 3.5-liter, 24-valve V-6 engine
achieves its awe-inspiring 290-hp peak at 6200 rpm, while an impressive
256 lbs-ft. of maximum torque occurs at 5000 rpm. Thanks to our VTEC®,
high-inertia intake manifold and other powerful technologies, the RL's
torque curve is broad and flat, ensuring immediate responsiveness everywhere
in the rpm range. Designed to redefine the luxury performance sedan,
the new engine is more compact, and the engine block and heads are comprised
of lightweight, aluminum alloy. The Drive-by-Wire Throttle System
helps provide smooth acceleration, a refined shift feel and improved
performance in all driving conditions. And all the while in your blissful
existence, you'll feel even better knowing that the RL is certified
as an Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-2) by CARB (California Air Resources
Board). The all-new 2006 RL is the first car in the U.S. designed with the groundbreaking Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). This platform distributes torque between the front and rear wheels, as well as the left and right rear wheels. It's the only all-wheel drive system capable of accelerating the outside rear wheel in a turn for enhanced handling and additional turning force. The system optimizes acceleration traction by sending power to the wheels with the most traction for increased control. The result is class-leading cornering performance and stability, as well as superior traction on dry or wet surfaces. The 2006 RL offers plenty of options for achieving smooth, responsive shifting. With its 5-Speed Sequential SportShift automatic transmission, you have the flexibility to shift gears with either the shift lever on the center console or the steering wheel- mounted paddle shifters. When you're in fully automatic mode, the transmission easily adapts to your driving style. But if you're in a take-charge mood, you can move the gearshift lever into the 5-position shift gate to the left and either upshift or downshift by flicking the lever forward or back. With the new steering wheel- mounted paddle shifters, you can shift all you like without ever taking your hands off the wheel. In addition to its smooth, precise shifting, high engine rev and dynamic performance, the RL has a lockup torque converter in the transmission that improves fuel efficiency. Thanks to its remarkably
nimble handling, the all-new 2006 RL is truly a driver's car. In fact,
its engineers designed a completely new front and rear suspension system
to achieve its highly responsive feel. In the front, racing-inspired
independent double-wishbone design maximizes the tire-to-pavement contact
area for a distinctly linear feel while cornering. It also helps to
minimize body roll. In the rear, independent multi-link suspension provides
solid resistance to lateral forces, while deterring rear-end lift during
braking. Front and rear stabilizer bars help control body movement in
corners and on bumps. Major suspension components are crafted of forged
aluminum to allow the wheels to respond quickly and precisely to driving
conditions and both ends are mounted to aluminum subframes that help
isolate the cabin from road harshness and noise. While most all-wheel
drive systems are designed to enhance vehicle traction on slippery surfaces,
the SH-AWD system was engineered to do much more. It uses torque
not only for propulsion, but also to increase steering, cornering precision
and to dramatically enhance vehicle maneuverability. The RL's 17 x 8.0-inch
aluminum-alloy wheels are fitted with P245/50R17 98 V-rated Michelin
high-performance, all-season tires that fill the wheel wells and add
to its aggressive stance. Large 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-piston front
calipers, ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and brake assist
provide optimum stopping power, and all four wheels have ventilated
brake rotors, like the Acura NSX sports car. And to help maintain control
in all driving conditions, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) adjusts
brake pressure and engine power to help correct understeer and oversteer.
